James Ward-Prowse, a player from Southampton, is signed by West Ham United.

The 28-year-old English player has signed a four-year deal with the Hammers.

Ward-Prowse started playing for Southampton when he was eight years old. He made 410 senior games and was the captain of the team, which was sent to the Championship last season.

He said, “I’m excited to be at West Ham United.”

“From the outside, it looks like this club has been getting better for a few years now, and after winning the Europa Conference League last year, you can tell that this club has a lot of momentum.”

David Moyes, the boss of West Ham, said, “He has played very well in the Premier League over the last ten years, always putting up good numbers season after season.

“Of course, he’s a great leader, which is another big plus for us. He’ll be a strong voice for us in the middle of the field, pushing the team forward.”

Ward-Prowse made his Saints debut as a 16-year-old in an EFL Cup game against Crystal Palace in October 2011. On the first day of the 2012-13 Premier League season, he played his first game in the top division.

Only David Beckham has scored more than 17 goals from straight free kicks in the Premier League than Ward-Prowse. He is known for his set-piece delivery.

Ward-Prowse was named club captain in 2020, and Southampton said that he is “one of the best talents to ever come out of the Saints academy.”

A statement said, “His loyalty to Southampton FC for 20 years, his professionalism on and off the field, and his help in the community mean that he will be remembered as a Saints legend.”

West Ham, which moved England midfielder Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105 million, has spent most of the summer trying to sign Ward-Prowse.

Edson Alvarez, a Mexican player, just moved to the Hammers from Ajax in a deal worth about £35 million.

West Ham also has a deal with Manchester United for defender Harry Maguire, and they want to borrow Manchester City’s Cole Palmer.
