The Best New Shows of 2023 (So Far): ‘The Last of Us’ to ‘Beef’

Returning series have dominated 2023 television, and the end of numerous iconic shows including “Succession,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and “Ted Lasso” (at least in their current forms) have been particularly poignant moments.

Dramas, comedies, limited series, docuseries, and even the hard-to-categorize comedy-reality hybrid “Jury Duty,” which has helped put the previously unheralded Amazon channel Freevee on the map, have all contributed to the first half of 2018’s memorable television output.

We’ve compiled a list of the other notable releases up till June and arranged them by their release dates. A couple of the entries are sufficiently similar to be chronologically matched together on the basis of when the first one appeared, which is indicative of the times.

Overall, they’re not terrible, but Hollywood has some work to do if 2017 is going to be celebrated as a landmark year for television, both in terms of its freshman crop and its senior class. The Writers Guild of America’s strike against the studios has the potential to severely restrict the production of scripted shows into the second half of 2023 if it continues for much longer.
